My "business deal"

Yesterday was a long day. Stephanie and I nanny for my friend's daughter, Emma, twice a week. (Emma is 6 weeks older than Stephanie.) The girls are great, they play well together, and now that they are both toddlers my job is much easier. They play and interact and have fun without too much intervention by me. (I think it's important for children to play independently, without constant adult interaction. Of course i'm always right there to step in a re-direct if needed, but for the most part I let them do their own thing.)

I left Emma's house at 3:45 yesterday, and headed to the grocery store. Stephanie loves sitting in the cart at the grocery store, especially because she usually gets cheese at the deli. We had to do a big shopping, and it took us almost an hour. I lugged the groceries from the cart into the car, and then at home, from the car into the house. I then gave Stephanie a snack (it was 5:00, and she's used to eating dinner by then), unpacked all the groceries, made dinner, hung up some wet clothes from a load of laundry I had done earlier, washed the dinner prep dishes, and put away the lunch and diaper bag things from the day. By this time, it was 5:45, and I was EXHAUSTED!! But I have to say, I was proud of myself for accomplishing everything. I'm still having some of that first trimester exhaustion, but it's getting better. So for me, getting so much done in such a short amount of time was my version of closing a big business deal if I were a business woman, or making a big breakthrough with a child if I were a teacher, etc. When you're a stay-at-home mom, these types of things are the things that have meaning for you. Of course, Dan came home two minutes after I had sat down for the first time in over two hours. Why does it always happen like that?

Today was just another day. We nannyed, then came home and did some house things. I made a black bean casserole for dinner, and right now Dan is out tutoring, Stephanie is in bed, and i'm going to relax for a little bit!

The Beginning

Right now I am 12 weeks and 1 day pregnant with baby number 2. Stephanie, (baby number 1), is 13 months old. Everyone always says that you don't have time with baby number 2 for things such as photo albums, pregnancy journals, baby books, etc. While I will do my best to maintain such things with this little bean, I figured that starting a pregnancy blog was a great start, and a way to document this special time in our lives.

I only have about 2 more weeks left in my first trimester. Luckily it hasn't been too hard for me, although I've been much more nauseaus with this one than with Stephanie. And while I havn't had any actual morning sickness, I have been extremely exhausted. I started wearing maternity pants exclusively today. I tried to zip up a pair of regular jeans, and they were just too uncomfortable. I showed early with Stephanie, so i'm not surprised that i'm already showing with this one, too. I also started taking "baby bump" pictures at week 10, like I did with my 1st pregnancy. One of the major differences i've noticed this time around is that I don't have the same amount of time to devote to the pregnancy mentally. Which is actually a good thing I think. When I was pregnant with Stephanie, that was the one and only, singular thought on my mind. This time, I'm so busy chasing after an active toddler that I can't always dwell on the fact that i'm pregnant. I think this makes me less anxious about everything, and is making the time go by faster. I feel like it was just yesterday that I got that positive reading on the pregnancy test, but it's already been 8 weeks! In 7 weeks we should be able to find out the gender, and we're very excited. I go back and forth about what I think it's going to be. At first I was completely convinced it was a boy. Then, after the first ultrasound I started to think it was a girl. So who knows? I was convinced Stephanie was a boy, and clearly that turned out not to be true. So we'll see!

Well, it's 9:30 at night right now, my typical bedtime. It's been a long, busy day of celebrating (my best friend Brandi's little boy Brayden turned 1!), and I think I need to relax in front of the TV for a little while.
